Prairie Fire Alpacas
I raise alpacas, and we have alpaca socks, yarns, dryer balls,
We raise 50 alpacas near Saskatoon! We shear them once/year and after I clean all the vegetation etc out of the fleeces I ship my fiber to a mill to get yarns made and I have hand knit alpaca shawls, thrum mitts, toques, slippers, etc. The soft baby alpaca fibers are made into yarns, the medium grade fiber is made into socks and the coarse fiber is made into insoles. I have people out to see my alpacas often as I have an alpaca open house in the fall, I’m a Prairie Art Road trip in July and this year I was part of the Saskatchewan open farm days. People come and feed our alpacas, meet the new babies and shop in our farm store. Alpacas are from Peru, Bolivia and Chili. They are pregnant for 11 months and we breed them to have their babies June, July and August. I love the beautiful fleeces we get from the alpacas every spring and the end products that you can make with them!
